Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
